How To Pass a Technical Interview

How to Pass a Technical Interview

Let’s face it; you are likely to face a technical interview for many cybersecurity positions. Weather its for a position as a customer success consultant, cloud security architect, or SOC analyst. Employers will try to weed out candidates who cannot demonstrate a reasonable level of technical expertise. This can be cause for concern, but only if you don’t prepare. I will show you a few tips to ensure that you succeed in a technical interview.

Here is the scenario:

You have passed a phone screen from a recruiter and a short zoom interview with a manager. They like what they see from you. The next step is a 40-minute technical interview, where you will be given temporary access to the companies SIEM and will have to demonstrate skills in a video conference with a phony data set and show how you would triage alerts along with a list of requirements.

Your heart is beating, you are getting nervous, and you are starting to think that you are going to flop. You have never worked on a SIEM before, and the platform looks so damn complicated. You are still working your other job, but now you have this project coming up. I have been here, and I know how to surpass all the challenges and fears that this situation creates.

Firstly,

Don’t panic. Get your bearings by understanding the task you have been given. Reread the rubric and draw out the project with a concept map.

Load up the platform you have been given and go through any guides or learning materials that were provided. The more you go through the platform and familiarize yourself, the smoother your presentation will be.

Practice, Practice, Practice!!!! This cannot be stressed enough. In addition, make sure you do at least one run-through with another person who can offer constructive criticism.

Make sure all requirements are addressed in your presentation.

Be sure to overprepare!!! You have on shot with this employer, and it is better to go above and beyond expectations than to do a standard job and be beaten out by other candidates.

Ultimately, do your best and be calm, cool, and collected during the technical interview. This critical part calls for you to show level headedness, resourcefulness, and an ability to follow directions.

So, there you have it, my tips for sticking your technical interviews.

Cheers!! And happy job hunting.
